Basic Vertical Training
with the Vertical Section of the NSS
is offered by a Front Royal Grotto member

National Speleological Society (NSS) Vertical Section and Front Royal Grotto member Kurt Waldron will be instructing the NSS Vertical Section’s Basic Vertical Training. He will use the NSS Vertical Section’s “Basic Vertical Training Students Manual” to teach safe vertical practices to anyone who is interested, no matter his or her skill level.
You do not need to be a FRG member to participate.
Students that successfully complete the course will receive a certificate for their records.
Tim White, the NSS Vertical Section’s Nylon Highway Editor, Bridge Day Safety Team Member and Moderator for the NSS On Rope Forum, said, “I have full confidence in you (Kurt) teaching a Single Rope Techniques class.”
With the NSS Vertical Section’s blessing, Kurt is prepared to accept the responsibility of providing people interested in learning a basic understanding of the concepts and equipment needed to properly execute SRT.
Schedule
The NSS Basic Vertical Training will be conducted in Maryland and Virginia to service the entire Washington D.C., and Virginia Area Region.
The tentative schedule is every THIRD SATURDAY Kurt will plan a meeting place for vertical practice.

• Has successfully completed NSS Basic Vertical Training course
• Is the current Chairperson of the NSS Safety and Techniques Committee
• Completed Level 2 National Cave Rescue Commission (NCRC) training
• Actively involved in the Germany Valley Karst Survey Hellhole, Schoolhouse and Shovel Eater Explorations
• Performed long rappels at Sotano Golondrinas & El Culabra in Mexico and El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.
• Tandem rappels at Whitesides Mountain, N.C., and Bridge Day at the New River Gorge Bridge, W. Va.
